Am I a Paper MCSA??

Hello,

I recently got my MCSA cert. I'm studying Exchange 2000, and will be going
for my MCSE. I am currently working as a Network Admin, for a very very
small company. I built their network up from scratch. I'm working on my BS
in Information Systems. I've been looking for a better job lately but I
keep getting turned down. Not even a call back. What is wrong with my
credentials, How can I prove that I am a pro and not a guy who just thinks
he knows alot about computers. It seems there are so many people out there
who want to be in IT because its cool, because they can use Word and
Internet Explorer and can cut and paste, and install a hard drive that they
are IT experts. Am I seen in this light. I have a broad range of interests
in IT - Linux, Unix , web development, parallel computing. Sometime I just
get the feeling that I am not a real professional but just someone who is
good a making it look like I do. Can someone who works for a real company
ask me a few IT questions, so I can prove me worth. Let me know if I am a
real pro

Rich

Re: Am I a Paper MCSA??

If you have gone so far as to build a network from scratch, then no...you
are not a paper MCSA. I suppose it depends on the type of job you want. Are
you interviewing for a lateral move...for another admin position...or are
you looking for higher ground?

I suppose it all depends on what you are looking for. MCSA is a fairly good
cert, but it's not a guarantee for a chief admin position.

BTW, I know some tried and true pros who STILL don't feel like they are REAL
professionals. Part of the fun of this business IMHO is there is ALWAYS so
much more to learn.

I think that if you are just starting in the business, you are in the
position where you have to get your experience with other venues...then you
can look into greater opportunities. I say follow your interests...since it
sounds like you're in the business for the love more than for the money.
Anyone else have a couple of cents to pitch in here?

Re: Am I a Paper MCSA??

You're just inexperienced and you're looking for a career move competing
with folks with more experience and maybe more certs. Don't doubt yourself,
just keep learning.
