XP and Windows 2000 connection question.

Hi all,

I have an question about XP and Win 2k pro.

I connect one of the XP professional computer with a Win 2k pro computer
with a 5 port hub.
Set up a same gateway on both computers. Both use a same workgroup called
workgroup ..not domain connection here.

XP Ip address is 10.10.1.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 10.10.1.21

Win 2k pro is 10.10.1.1.
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway is 10.10.1.21

When I click on network place and I can see XP computer there...but can't
access...
I already make a share folder and C drive to be share from others...

But I still can't access any files from my Win 2K computer...Can someone
give me some hints here???

Re: XP and Windows 2000 connection question.

Is the XP still configured to use Simplified sharing mode ?
Have you tried use of the fully qualified credentials (machine\user)?

Make sure the Win2k machine doesn't have a blank password. XP won't let
machines connect if they provide no password (need matching accounts too).

Also if you have simple file sharing turned on then even if you connect as
administrator you'll only connect as a guest but that's a side issue.

Did you try my suggestion of making sure the 2k machine didn't have a blank
password? It's a security feature of XP to decline all attempts to access
that don't provide a password.

Anyway to answer your question open explorer > tools > folder options > view
> scroll to the bottom to uncheck the box marked "use simple file sharing

(Recommended)".

Can you ping each of the computers from the other?

Are you running NetBIOS protocol as well? Try from the XP computer mapping
a network drive to \10.10.1.1\c$ using computer_name\administrator of your
Win2k computer.

Cheers and good luck
Mike

Just tested this on an XP box, I made a local user with no password, created
a share, and connected to it using the local user with no password.

Cheers
Mike

Re: XP and Windows 2000 connection question.

Check your machine's setting for the local policy security option called
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only

Didn't you cover this in 270?
