OK, I just downloaded the demolinux (www.demolinux.com) ISO which includes Star
Office. This is a stand-alone bootable cd install of linux. What I need
though is to have gcc and jdk. Now I haven't had a chance to burn it yet so I
haven't evaluated this distro, but is there a way to modufy an ISO.

I mean, say JDK is not in there (as I presume its not), then can I mount the
ISO and add JDK and burn the new ISO? Assuming this is possible, I'd have to
download the demolinux ISO without Star Office to make room for JDK since the
Star Office ISO is already almost 700MB and there's an ISO without Star Office
that's closer to 600MB.

BTW, how big can a CD-R get?

Any ideas?

Yes, you can mount it in linux like any other filesystem.

It's read-only. But you could mount it, copy all the files somewhere else,
make your modifications, and then make a new iso (man mkisofs)

Sorry, I didn't read the initial post. I was thinking of an ordinary iso
image. In the case of a DemoLinux iso, if it is anything like the Knoppix
version I have, this won't work.

I suppose you could boot into the DemoLinux enviornment from the cd and copy
the (effective) root filesystem somewhere and modify it- but then you have
the problems of fitting all that info onto an ordinary cd (in the case of
knoppix it is 1.7G) , and howto create a "live filesystem". How they do
that is beyond me.

I'll leave answering these questions to someone who knows (though there are
some links regarding it on their website).
