Are you connecting this so the switch is *across* the +12 to Ground
line? IOW, one terminal on the switch on the +12, and the other
terminal on ground? Like this:
<+12>----------|------------------------------------<+term on lights>
|
<switch>
|
<GND>-------|------------------------------------<gnd term on lights>
If so, you are shorting the PS when you turn the switch "on". That
would explain why the lights (and everything else) work when the
switch is off (no short), and the PS shuts down (self preservation)
when you turn the switch on (shorting the output).
The switch needs to be connected *inline* with the +12 lead to the
lights:
<+12>------------<switch>---------------<+ term on lights>
<GND>---------------------------------------<GND term on lights>
Forgive me if you already knew this, but I'm unclear on exactly how
you have this hooked up.
I resisted 'till I couldn't take it anymore.

Yes. You need to have the ground wire from the PS connected directly
to the ground terminal on the lite. Then you need to cut the +12
line/wire, and insert the switch -- connecting one terminal of the
switch to the +12 line from the PS, and the other terminal on the
switch to the +12 terminal on the lite.
