I have a question. I was buying a surge protector and the guy at the store asked me if it was for a new computer. He said it would slow the processor down on a new computer and over time hurt it. He said I needed a battery backup unit instead. Anyone heard anything about this?

Good lord, he's full of it! I agree, tell the store manager that you'll be taking your business elsewhere and exactly why.

Maybe the sales guy really thought that was true (I doubt it), but his lack of training is the store's responsibility.

hehe, I wonder if that salesman had any success with his sales pitch or if preacher just look too gullible.
that salesman has guts tho to even put this out... I mean, its a really good chance that someone will call him on it on the spot, I know I will ask him to clarify and watch him squirm but man, gutsy fellow.
I bet if I go to the store and ask him for regular laser printer paper he will try to sell me laminated photo quality paper because paper jam will kill my costly printer and cost me more money in the long run or something... ;/

While, he was wrong about slowing down the processor, he is right about the battery backkup - it's better than surge protector.

Most battery backups also have a surge protector built it.

I just wonder why couldn't he explain why the battery backup is better.

comeon webmaster, altho battery backup is definitely better than a surge protector, his reason for suggesting backup is plainly a ploy to get more commission off of it.

Sure I can argue that yes, if u use surge only, that if ther eis a power outtage, the system shut down improperly, some files may be misplaced etc, thus when the system is booted up, it may be slower as it try to reconstruct all system files etc. but comeon, that is thin at best.
why don't he just sell preacher a battery backup with 2 hour battery and pager notification while he is at it.

Given the context, he was obviously trying to scam preacher and need to be dealth with appropriately. hell. let me sell you this optical mouse because traditional wheel mouse gather dust, create static electricity inside the mouse, send this static electricity off the wire to the port, frying your serial/ps2 port and frying your cpu...

I just can't see any justification for what he did, it was plainly wrong even tho the solution he suggested is better, his argument is just crap.

preacher, while battery backup is good, for home use, dont waste the money. how often do you have power outtages etc where you are...
systems are not that fragil, unless its mission critical etc, improper shut down once in awhile is not gonna kill it, make all data jumble.

batter>surge is like recommending scsi raid 5 getup with hardware raid card for home computer over regular cheap ide or even nt/2k or other cheap software mirror.

gotta agree a battery back-up is better but for home use a good surge protector is all you really need (unless your running a web-server or something that needs to be up 24/7)

a very similar thing happened to me when I was like 16 buying a surge protector (still have it now and never had any problem with it) the salesman tried to sell me a SPS or something (maybe it was a ups I don't know) I had some time to kill and let him try to BS me for about half an hour (OH, WOW I don't want that to happen to my system) and (I better get one of these)

in the end I got a $75 surge protector with 2 RJ-45,2 RJ-11, and 10 outlets (4 big enough for them big old power plugs like you had with your nintendo)

best $75 I ever spent

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't fall for this. He did get me on some printer cartilages. I bought a new printer and he said the ones with it were just trial sizes so I bought some to go with it. Guess what? When I got home it had the same ones in it. I almost went off and started to go back and complain to the manager. That's been over a month and I still ain't went. He said the faster processors will be slowed down by surge protectors. I still wish I had went to the manager and I may yet. This was at a Best Buy store.
