Q. You are the desktop administrator for your company. You upgrade all client computers from Windows 98 to Windows XP Professional.

A user now reports a problem. When she tries to restore her data from a backup tape created in Windows 98, Windows Backup cannot read or restore the data from the tape.

You need to enable the user to restore her data. What should you do?

A. Grant the user Allow - Modify permission on Removable Storage.
B. Import the tapes into an existing application media pool.
Log on as a local administrator and perform the restoration.

C. Create a new system media pool in Removable Storage.
Add the tapes to the media pool.

The answer is A. All questions unless otherwise stated are to be assumed that everything is set by default. A standard User local or on a domain does not that right permissions to add removable devices to there PC's. So you must allow them to add the device.

B is wrong, importing it into a media pool is not the problems answer.

C is just as wrong as B, the media pools have nothing to do with this question.

D is wrong because 98 does not have built in compression support, and if a 3rd party compression tool was used it would have been stated in the question. So by default that is wrong.

Ntbackup's ability to recognize tapes that were created with Msbackup is a feature exclusive to the Windows XP version of Ntbackup. Backup tapes created by Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) use the QIC113 format and can be identified by looking at the Identification label Type in Removable Storage Manager (RSM). The Windows NT and Windows 2000 versions of Ntbackup do not recognize or support tapes using the QIC113 format.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, restore the data from the tape or file by using Msbackup on a computer that is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me.
