I have a question for all of you. A friend of mine has a store with several computers set up in it and all of the computers are running win 98 or me and one is an nt workstation. He is opening up another store across town and he asked me if that computer could be part of the same network. Now at the store he has now it has internet access through isdn (all computers there are on it) and the new store will have dsl. How do I get both of the stores on the same network - I assume I set up a wan some how. Can someone please tell me what additional hardware or software I need to help him out.

hello,

it depends on how much traffic you want to push through the link. If the remote PC only needs to grab e-mails and send sales data a couple of times a day then a simple dial-up system will do it. You could even get away with using modems for that.

If the remote is going to be reading and writing files all day long then you need a more permanent connection. A VPN via the internet may be enough, or you may need to provide a direct link between the two buildings.

In the latter case you'd be better using routers and for more information on that I'd suggest you ask again in the Cisco CCNP forum.

re Peterd's comments, instead of going down the Cisco route you could aslo consider upgrading 2 of the PC's to Windows 2000 which comes with VPN built in. As you already have internet connectivity, you shouldn't have to buy anything else.

If the store is a gaming store you might want to upgrade the ISDN to a DSL line that way you can handle the additional incoming traffic also.
