internet connection

I know a guy that is having problems staying connected to the internet. He can't even open a page without getting disconnected. He's changed ISP's and still has it. He's had the phone company check his lines and they are ok. tech support from where he got his computer says the modem is ok. Is this a software or hardware problem?

probably need a little more info to go on but this might work
try disabling call waiting (in northeast US it's *70 check with your local phone co to see if it's different in your area)

also try setting up a manual connection with dial up networking (this is what I do)
but the username field may need to be changed for some isp's (like for me in the username field I have to put ELN/jombeewoof because I use earthlink i think the eln must stand for Earth Link Name or Nickname something like that)
check settings, make sure he's using ppp as his service type, etc...
check in the properties of his dial up networking connection write em all down and post em here we'll figure it out for ya

DIAL-UP?

Does he have DIAL-UP? That's his problem right there I have call waiting on my phone, and when I had dial-up, I would get bumped off because of the beep you hear when someone else tries to call you during your duration on the phone. Modems communicate by tones, any unrecognizable tone received by the modem, whether it would be a beep, static, or a quick pick up and hang up of the phone, will bump you offline. Do you have call waiting? If not it might be your modem, or telephone line from the wall jack to your PC. I had earthlink too as well, try the steps jombeewoof gave to you, sometimes the service provider has crappy software which require constant upgrades to communicate with their central computers.
