another nat issue

I have setup a DC, runnging NAT to share out a cable modem. I setup everything according to MS suggestions, however after a bit of use, i began to notice some slow down on the internet on the client machine. My ping when connected through ICS is replying with time=59ms, now through NAT it is, time=230ms. it varies back and forth. any ideas.

I would check with my cable modem ISP to ensure the problem isn't on their end. How long and how often do you experience this connection slow down? Could it be just usual Internet congestion? Cable connection performance is related to the number of users online at one time. Have you pinged during off peak times and compared the results to peak times? Could be numerous other scenarios. There are lots of things to rule out.

Only when nat is running does it slow down. I can disable nat and reenable ICS and the connection speed picks back up. I believe it might be the fact that NAT is being translated via windows 2000 and is using the processor to do work. It has to translate for packets outbound and then inbound. So PII, 256mb server might be the slow down. But doesnt ICS use a mini NAT to do the work?

Yes, ICS does provide translation also?

Would there be a drastic diff between the two, to make it slow down? Does my theory sound logical?

NAT, certainly, has many more capabilities over ICS, and maybe this extra overhead is the cause your slow down. Especially with an older processors. You might try doing some performance monitoring.
