Question Is it just me?

Is it just me or does it seem like this field sucks. Is it just me or does this field suck XXX in pay and job opening's. After reading all the crap that I do its gotten me down and even thinking about going back to the drawing board about figuring out a career. I dont know what to do anymore

EVERY field sucks at the entry level stage. Ask a lawyer what law school was like, and how many hours a week they worked their first few years of practice. Or a doctor. Or a rookie policeman stuck on a walking beat. Whatever you decide to do, love it for itself or those first few years will be excruciating.

It's a bad year for IT. It'll turn around eventually -- already it seems like some entry level stuff is opening up but the competition is fierce.

Agreed. You cannot enter a field and expect to make six-figure salaries. You generally start at the bottom!

I completely agree too! You are gonna be very dissapointed expecting a 6 figure salary to start out. Some people never get there, others take years of hard work & dedication!

It's all hard work from the beginning. You just have to dedicate yourself & enjoy what you do, even when it clearly sux! No matter what career you choose, it will be a lot of work! And you definitely have to enjoy what you do!

I don't think the IT industry will ever be the same. There won't be another Bill Gates. The companies that have survived will become mature companies and at some time they will die. At the moment it is about survival of the fitest. Lean and mean. IT has become another office job just like there are clerks and accountants. programming will become just a second language except you speak it via a keyboard and it will be great if you can speak many.

I tend to agree with everyone so far. Jackiechan is right that the salaries won't be like they were before, but there is still a lot of potential in this industry. You have to look at the big picture rather than the starting salaries. A lot of places might have decent salaries to start with but they top out relatively quickly. You can make good money on the line in either Chicago or Detroit thanks to the unions, but is that really what you want to do with your life?

As far as future money and career prospects, I still think the IT industry is up there with just about any other.

Me too.I think many people have the wrong focus.Dont get me wrong I enjoy the forums. But I absolutely stay abreast of what going and where the industry is going.

Maybe look at some other ways to enter the field.I dont think anyone can predict the market a year from now.Think creatively.Think competition. This is an extremely competitive field.Especially for the inexperienced. How bad do you really want it? Most of all shed your expectations they will only defeat you.

It is good to read through some real good and positive post in this forum and I can't express how much of an encouragement it's been to me. Well done everyone, and remember persistence and determination can take you a long way. Don't give up as nothing's easy in life it's about having the right attitude and efforts that counts. Keep the dreams alive regardless of your present future as things could only get better. When there is life there is hope. Some people don't even have any hope for anything, lets be thankful we can hope for something better in the near future. It ain't over till you win is the attitude my friends.

its not just you... but i think we need to realize that this isnt the late 90's and there arent alot of startups out there willing to pay big bucks like there was then, of course if you listen to it schools things couldnt be better... "if you listen to them"
