I need some advice
Hello fellow members. I am in a real dilema here. I am currently in the Navy working basically as a DBA. I currently have and A.S. in Computer Networking and I graduate from U.O.P (Phoenix) with a B.S. in Information Technology in about six months. I am due to get out of the Navy in December. I will take the last test for CCNP this month. The only experience I have is with setting up the school labs and doing side jobs for friends at which I am really profiecient. My question is what job I should be looking at when I get out of the Navy.....and what pay range should I be expecting. I am not looking to make millions but at least what I am getting now. the experience is lacking but the degree shows I can be taught and the military background(8 years) shows commitment. What should i expect.

Why get out your alomost half way to retirement. Change your mos at re-up time to something with network duties. gain experinece with network techonogies while your in and when time to retire get a check from uncle sam and probably step out into the world making alot more with 20 year experience working for uncle sam then degrees and little experience. Plus your getting paid from the gov. You could even persue a masters or something higher while your in. you could really bone up on experience and paper. I kicked my self in the butt big time when i got out for not getting more experience and education at the exspense of the CORP. just food for thought,Hope this helps !!

Not to mention the market isn't great right now for openings or pay. Makes me wish I had gone through and joined the Army back in '84. Why did I listen to my mother?

The military sure wasn't for me. I was concerned that I would take a shot to the face, and it would ruin my modeling career. And that career is gonna take off any day now, I just know it.........

Being an ex-DP.......
I know what you are saying. I too, spent 8 years in the Navy as a Data Processing Technician. I got out in 1994. To think that I'd have 16 years in by now; but that's OK. Things were alot different in 1994 than they are today. Jobs are alot more hard to come by and the competition is fierce. Congrats on UofP. I graduated with a BS from there in 1999. By far, one of the best moves I made. Are you planning on staying there in LA, or moving someplace else?
My previous employer was amazed that I finished my degree in three years, while working fulltime. That was a big reason why I got the job.
You've got a tough choice ahead of you.
As far as pay is concerned, it depends where you are living. Here in the SW, I'd say that realistically, you should be thinking mid-30's. Elsewhere, I don't really know.
On the other hand, why not look for a position that combines what you are doing now, with what you want to be doing.
Good Luck!

I got out of the British Army after ten years service....you have to make your own luck in this world. The skills and discipline that you have WILL help you to shine in civilian life - I've had FOUR job changes since I've been out, all of them within the same company and ALL of them a promotion.
