Question about switches
Can you program switches to pass only certain types of packets.
I just added a 2828 EN on my network and I can ping the server and workstation, but I can not log on to the server.
I am even able to ping by using the server name

If you can ping the server then it's not a switch problem. The problem is with the server or the authentication method your using.

What you need to do is check your Physical connections and verify your protocol stack configuration. If you are connected by a switch, make sure that your nodes are all in the same IP network ID.

if he can ping the server and workstation they are either on the same subnet or there is a router with their subnet route. You might want to use the ip forward udp command, if your using a NT Server
