Password Protected Worksheet, Help!!
Are there any Excel Guru's out there? One of the employees in my company has password protected one of her work sheets. Unfortunately, she has forgotten her password. The MS Excel book says the following:
"You can type in a password, although this is optional. Do this only if it's absoluely necessary. If you assign a password to the worksheet, then it cannot be unprotected again with out the password. If you forget it, you're out of luck. Period."
Does anyone know a way around this?
Thanks
Kevin

Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to get around this problem, although there shouldn't be a limit to how many times you can try and guess it.

I would you a Disk Editor to strip the password out but takes a while to determine where the password is stored, best if moved to a blank diskette to start.
But, IF you want to pay for the software then try one of these sites and they offer a FREE cracker if the password is 4 letters or less otherwise it is $25 per Microsoft Application:
http://www.passwordrecoverytools.com/
Also, this site offers ExcelLockSmith or WordLockSmith to crack password for $5.00 each or both for $7.00 which is very cheap!
http://www.intertek.org.uk/downloads/
You might also try www.download.com for they have several utilities that you can download as well to crack Excel Passwords & etc...
Now I am going to try and find my SuperZAP diskette, now that was a cool program for this kind of work! I used to use it to crack the protection software of Lotus 123 & DBase software.

Hey Cross,
We all like to help people out, but what you are asking, and I know you intentions are honorable is likely to be a security issue for the company. It would also likely explain why the person put a password on the file as well. Not to mention the sensitivity of the information that might be in the Excel file.
I think this is when a company should simply pay for the utility to crack the password or contact Microsoft and have them do it but the cost is likely to be $195 to $250 for a single incident/case. I think the company is likely to pay seeing he already gave Berg the thumbs up on $45 expense!
But if somebody has a utility that works and is a shareware program that is willing to send it to him then by all means do so. That is why I also recommended the www.download.com web-site seeing they had several programs that could be of possible use for removing the password.

Very true. I was wrong. He should talk to an admin and see if the server is able to decrypt the file.
I was only going to forward him to a corp in California, that unfortunately does charge $149 a password problem.
Then again I and we all have to be careful with how we help one another in these forum.
My apologies, thank you Doug for being attentive

Thanks to all
I appreciate all of your suggestions and thoughts on cracking the password problem. It just goes to show the value of forums like this and sharing the "knowledge base" is good for all.
