Geocities doesn't seem to allow people with new accounts to FTP anymore. You can't find the info on the website and if you try to FTP with a new account it doesn't work. They'll grandfather people with older accounts apparently. I found this out when I was trying to help a student FTP a site to Geocities. I've been able to do it for some time.
One thing you can do is to change the number of files that get uploaded at once. You can select the number of files at the bottom so that you can upload 10 or 15 at once. I would only recommend this if you have a lot of small gifs. Otherwise you could end up causing a bottleneck.

Many ways to do many things...
Go to http://home.about.com/ - excellent articles on a wide varity of subjects.
Also go http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ - and download Dreamweaver 4 for a trial. The best Web Designer I have used (and still use). The download gives you FULL functionality for 30 days including great help and an excellent tutorial to get you designing very nice pages. (No - I don't work for them, I just don't mind giving a free plug to something I LURVE!!)...Last thing, get creative and have fun!! Thats the most important part about web design.
