The oops file

I thought it might be interesting if we shared some blunders, either our own or those we have come across.

Anyway, here's one to start with.

I was looking at a machine yesterday. The hard drive was recognised in the BIOS but after POST there was the non-system disk error. I opened the box to have a look at the hard drive. Everything seemed to be connected. Then I noticed the screws. Not a matching pair, nothing particularly significant in that except that one looked large and old. And LONG! It's been screwed a good quarter of an inch into the logic board. Split it right in half.

I'm too inexperienced, so I haven't had time to have made many blunders, but there's time!

Pete

Thumbs up Oops ...........

A friend of mine called me to say his computer wouldn't turn on "there's no power and I've got no spare power cables to test if it is the cable." So off I toddle with my bag of spares to see what the problem is.

On arrival, his wife asked me if I would like a cup of coffee, and just to be polite I said "yes, thanks." I then noticed her taking the fuse out of the iron and proceed to put it in the kettle plug!! At first I thought nothing of it - I just thought "strange!!"

I then changed the cable on the computer and hit the switch and hey presto life.

Whilst drinking my coffee my friend said "strange it just going like that isn't it?" just as his wife came into the room and stated "no love, somehow I blew some fuses in the kitchen and I knew yours worked so I borrowed it!!" I left rather quickly after that!!

One of my worst oopsies was while replacing a heat sink/cpu fan with a screwdriver. As I'm sure most of you know, they are a biatch to get on. It is designed to have 1/2 mm give LOL. Getting the old one off was no sweat, but I had a tiny slip while pushing the bracket down. hehe Hence oopsie.
I scratched the mobo and the beast was dead. In the end I triumphed (as all geeks do )
I still had warranty coverage on the ol gal and was able to have it replaced under manufacturer warranty. I guess the guys down there don't really inspect the hardware very closely. mwahaha I told the dude I bought it from (owner)what happened and it was his idea to ship it back. So all I had to suffer was no pc for a week. *shudder* needless to say I learnt my lesson.

not really an oops but a funny story nonetheless

a few years ago a buddy of mine got his first pc a 486dx2 or something in a desktop style case the thing had no 5 1/4 and he neglected to tell me that when we were out buying a cd-rom drive so we get the thing to his house and I was like "dude you can't put this in there there is no spot for it" so we ended up cutting a hole in the top of the case running the wires through the hole and sitting the cd-rom on top of the case worked like a charm (actually still works) but he had a small hard drive 528MB or something so to "free up space" he would delete the biggest folder he could find c:\win\system
and I bet you all know how I spent my sunday's for about 2 months till I set the windows folder hidden (he couldn't figure out how I could get it to work after deleting windows but he couldn't)

and the moral of the story "IF YOUR FRIENDS ASK YOU TO FIX THEIR COMPUTER CHARGE EM"

I've got an oopsie. Awhile back I ordered a SCSI zip drive. I was installing it in my computer, I hooked up the data cable and then the power cable. Somehow I managed to get the power cable on upside down. It didn't give me much reistance and went right on. During the operational checkout, (turning the computer on) a nice smelling, burning components and PCB, white smoke came rolling out of the drive. So I immediately turned off power, and removed the drive. The thing stunk to high heaven. WOW! I thought about sending it back and telling them that it didn't work, but I think I threw it away instead. Talk about burning some money. Thing cost me like $99.

Thats my oopsie.
