AIM, ICQ or the like.....
Hey everyone....
I was just wondering....
Let's just say that a company wanted to ban all instant messenging software from the users that work there. How could the company monitor if someone was using it and if it were installed on someones PC.
Also....how could said "user" continue to use IM ?
Any work arounds????
This is not for me...its for a friend. =0Þ
Thanks a bunch......

The easiest way would be to block whatever you don't want running at the firewall level.

Firewall. That is key. The programs also should have a feature you can inquire to get what you wish to accomplish

I usually ssh into a UNIX or VMS machine and use IRC from there. There are open source messengers that can mimic AOL, ICQ, Yahoo! and even MSN, so I just put them in my home directory and use them from there. Speaking of which check this out:

An MSN clone that runs from the command line.

Thanks for all of your ideas.....
The person I need this information for is not technical. He is just a plain old PC user.....and he wants to be able to use IM even though his company is doing away with it March 1st. I guess its back to phone calls and e-mail for him.....unless....you guys can think of somthing else.
much gratitude....

Telneting or "secure-shelling" into a remote machine to use IRC is not really all that technical.
I guess using a laptop would be out of the question?
