Losing network connection
Hello,
We have several PCs that always lose network connections. We use Netware 5 and the workstations are Win98 or WinNT. Once they log in to Netware network system, they can access all the shared files on the shared drive, but after a couple hours, they cann't find the shared drive. The only way is to restart the pc, then all the network connecton will back. Can anybody give me some idea? Thanks.

Hi Wen,
You may want to post this in the Novell forums as well. I am not familiar with Novell, but I think your problem is an issue with your Novell network.

Wen,
I would start by looking at common threads. You say some machines are NT and some are 98. Are you using the clients from Novell or the microsoft clients? Do you have the latest? Does your Novell server show it as being up the whole time in the Monitor? How about other connectivity? Are you able to see other network objects? I had some real issues with some equipment awhile back and was able to narrow it down using a utility called Freeping. It gives you the ability to set up a continuous ping (you can set the time to a couple of minutes between so you don't saturate the network) and it gives you a graphic representation of good or bad connections. It could be a lot of things. To assume it is the Novell software could be misleading and get you stuck in a rut making it harder to get at the truth. In the end our problem was some old BIOS versions... go figure! Are you running IPX or IP? During the time you lose connectivity to the shared drive are you still able to use the print server functions? Can you still see the server? Can you ping it? It could be something as simple as a hub/switch being flakey. Make sure you work with good hard evidence. Anecdotal evidence will just sideline you and cause you frustration!

I still think its a network problem. The problem only occurs when the computers connect to the Novell network after a few hours.
