This is an excellent article. Everyone should take a look at this.

Not a bad article, but one has to consider the source and take it with a grain of salt. The rosy picture it paints of the certification industry is to be expected from a magazine that makes it's money off the certification industry.

Agreed

I take most things I read with a grain of salt, but this article does put the certifications and their process into perspective.

Interesting article the one myth i laugh at and like is;

Myth: “Certifications are marketing ploys designed to be moneymakers.”

Agreed Nicole..I would add that the bias is too much to be objective.

I think most of the points are true for a proffesional in the field. However, the certification industry is eyeing the newbie. That is where most of the money is being generated.

Its another sales pitch as unfortunate (desperate?) individuals spend thousands and thousands in an effort to be in IT.

"We must embrace life long learning" absolutely. However that learning doesnt have to be for the pursuit of certification.

When my employer trains me on something new..they dont say "get certified " they are much more interested in profficeinty with the product.I understand everywhere is different.

my original answer disappeared, so here we go again:

It is my experience both as a employee and employer that a cert does not give you a job. It does however give you an interview if it is the right cert/combination of certs.
After that, it is your winning personality that does the trick

You didn't mention technical prowess. And, might I add, accurately so. This has been my first day on these forums, and the majority of what I have seen can be synopsized by saying that too many people worry about what other people are doing and thinking.

There are tools available, certifications exist and have their place, why do all these people harp on questions like...

Braindumps...
Certification...

"There is only do or do not, there is no try" Yoda didn't even bother mentioning what other people think... I wonder why.

When I took the A+ exam, I went in white as a sheet, I came out white as a sheet. But I passed. So I know I have to have it down cold or i'm toast.Conversely, I have the satisfaction , that if I could pull it off under those circumstances, it must be burnt into my grey-cells like a mac address.
What really counts is: Do I really know the skills I am expected to know. And , Can they be of any use to the guy hiring me? Those certs i have on my piece of paper, give both of us a level of knowlege that we both can assume. and that's a good thing for both of us. It gives him or her a filtered group to look at. And I go to interviews much more relaxed than I am for exams, for sure.
