Question 9i or 8i

Hi guys,

I got all the books and notes in 8i and should take the exams one year ago. But for some reasons, I wasn't ready to take exams until now. So I am really confused whether I should take 8i tracks for 5 exams + 9i update exam or take 9i track for only 4 exams to get OCP? You know it costs a lot for books and exam fees. Also, online exam for 1z0-007 is only $90 now. If 1z0-001 is no different than 1z0-007, can I take 1z0-007 and follow by the other 8i track exams to get my 8i license? Thank you very much for the help!

Sam

Which track

Hi,
I pasted here what I got from this site
http://www.oraworld.com/dbaexam.htm#whichtrack

Oracle is retiring the Oracle8 track as of March 31, 2002; thus, we do not recommend pursuing this track.

That leaves the 8i and 9i DBA tracks. If you choose the 8i track, will you be behind the times by the time you are certified? The answer is: no. Most companies are still using Oracle8i to run their businesses. In fact, most companies will not change to 9i until (1) there is some real technological advantage to doing so that will bring more money into their business or (2) they are forced to do so by Oracle. (Would you change what was working fine unless you absolutely had to or unless it would bring you more money?)

Therefore, pursuing the 8i track is a safe bet at this time. Your final decision should be based on whether the employment opportunities you are currently seeking require Oracle8i or 9i expertise. And, remember, if you decide to get certified in the Oracle8i track, you can always upgrade to the Oracle9i track at a later date by passing the single Oracle9i upgrade exam.

Based on what I read and discussions at Oracle Open World, I would take the 8i tests and then take the 9i New Features for Administrators test. This is what I am doing and it seems to be working well. There are several new books out for 9i but the investment you made for 8i should not go to waste. I would recommend that you take all the practice tests available, visit the selftestsoftware.com site and also get the Oracle Press book (Practice tests for 8i).

Mike

Thanks!

Hey, I got your points. Thanks a lot. You solved all my problems. Now I will concentrate on 8i exams and waste for no time. Good luck for all of us.
