I'm just going to use it for hands-on, maybe 2 or 3 gig

If your looking for an inexpensive tape drive I know of a couple people that used the Iomega Ditto tape drives with success. One was fro 4GB, and the other for 10GB compressed. I've seen them both either new or slightly used on Ebay for sometimes as cheap as $15 or less.

I know there are some fancy HP and Seagate drives, but you will usually pay out the yingyang.

Just before that tapes are readily available for whichever model you buy.

As for software, you can download it off iomega.com if the tape drive doesn't come with it.
