Matching CPU Stepping

How can you check the stepping of CPUs (besides poping the CPUs into a machine and checking the steppings there.)?

Looks like I might have answered my own question. Looks like the stepping info may be the last 5 letters of the product code on an Intel Box. Im guessing that the numbers may be on the CPU somewhere (if you can manage to get the fan & heatsink off).

I dont see a label like that on the Athlon XP box (is there one on an Athlon MP box maybe?) Guessing the only way to tell with an Athlon is to look on the CPU (if its written there which I guess it probrobly would be).
