value
I am a consultant and i do read up on articles and see trends in the market.
In an article in the computerUser magazine, they have flat out given cisco the disrespect. I was shocked to hear that cisco is being look at like it is MS.
They said that cisco's value is not as good as internet programming and development.
I am busting my *** to compete in this market and a magazines like that and many say that the ccna, ccda, ccnp, ccdp is like Microsoft exams.
It is very disturbing to read stuff like that and especially since most of the networks have cisco and the powerhouse ISPs use cisco products, like 7000 series routers and upper model catalysts.
Most MS professionals freeze when they see the routers/switches and the teleco side of things. just for the ccda i am reading 2 800 CP books at the same time and using visio, and test prep software, these exams are not easy like MS exams and the magazines and some employers are looking at cisco as an easy cake walk and not of any value.
Companies like sprint are pushing for business frame services and that's gonna require more cisco techs and stupid magazines like that mock cisco.
No matter how bad folks, magazines, critics may put the negative on the cisco track, im still going to wrap up my ccda and the ccdp this year. It's worth it to be strong willed and not follow everyone's criticism.
I do have router/switches experience, 2 years, so im not just breaking into the field, im just steamed that all the insane hours of work/study for a good cisco career gets smashed like that!
my .2

Glad to see someone finally wrote an article like that because I have been saying that here since Cisco came out with the version 2 exams. Having taken some of the version 1 CCNP exams and some version 2 I can swear to the difference in difficulty.
All this means is what employers already know, that simply having a certification doesn't mean you have the level knowledge you may need for the position they are trying to fill. It does however show that you have put in a great deal of effort and time to achieve the certifications.
Cisco has gone out of its way to say the new one day lab for CCIE is not easier then the old two day, but I have a hard time swallowing that story too, but if I can pass it in a few months, we'll all know that it is. Course when MadChef passes in the near future we won't know anything because he would have passed either of them
Go gettem MadChef!

I'm right with you on that one, having taken some v1 and v2 exams. The difference in difficulty is great.
As far as taking the lab soon, who knows. I haven't done technical work since August, and I won't be doing any up through my lab date in March. I'm not sure that I have the heart to prep for the lab when I'm not doing this on a day to day basis anymore. Maybe the PMP instead.

.....just an article
and I don't give it much merrit. The writer for that computer rag probably failed the CCNA and MCSE's both. The only real comparison between Cisco and MS certs is that they are both still in demand and both still very popular.
That writer probably has to live off the $500 they paid him for that story for a while.
We can look at monster.com, etc... and see which certs are in demand and given preference. I also agree that there is no substitute for work experience.
ComputerUser? The title of that rag speaks for itself..... User.....

Well I have seen an article which ranks the certifications value.
It goes
(1) MCSE
(2) MCDBA
(3) OCP
(4) MCP tied with CCIE (!!!!!!!!!!)
(Emphasize added by me).
Need I say that even a baby can guess that 'research' was funded by M$

IT is a Funny word
people who compare MS to cisco are pure strangers to technology and are very helpless next to true networking.
So they become editors and try to bash good technology.

Having had a workmate pass the new one day CCIE exam I can assure you that the one day exam is no easier than the 2 day exam. In fact my workmate said that it was harder than the 2 day exam due to the time factor.

I accept huntert and teza. (Even though I have no Cisco certification!)
I know the value of Cisco certifications.
