I took two 10-week courses at the local technology center. First, operating systems--we used the book "A+ Operating System Technologies, by David Groth and Dan Newland." It is one of a two book set and comes with a CD. We only used the one book.
The second course was the hardware component. We used Michael Meyers' "All in One A+ Certification Exam Guide." It also includes a CD.
The Tech school also gave each student vouchers for practice tests from Self Test Software. I downloaded those from the web site.
In addition, I signed up for an e-mail question a day from ExamCram. Everything helped--I especially like Meyers' book and CD--the practice tests are VERY much like the actual Comptia tests, even down to the wallpaper.

I just passed my exams on 5 Jan 02. I used Mike Meyers book as well as A+ Certification DVD Certrainer by Mcgraw hill. Both were very useful. They complimented the actual 6 years of hands on experience that I already possesed.
