Unhappy pages

Is there any way to stop multiple pages from opening up by them self when you open a page on the internet.I hate having to close them all

I think there are certain types of privacy software that may stop all of the ads from popping up all over the place, but I am not sure what it is, have only heard of it in passing. Those ads are awfully annoying though.

I've also heard of some kind of software that can make pop up ads quit but i dont remember what it is called or where i saw it - if i see it again, I'll post it

Here's something I've picked up along the way for stopping pop ups:

In IE go to
Tools
Internet Options
Security Tab
Custom Level button
Disable all Active X, Java and Scripts (esp at bottom)
