Another stupid question...
Is it better to learn Oracle on a UNIX or a Widnows platform, or doesn't it really matter? I already have Oracle 8i installed on my home lab running Widnows 2000, but I was juts curious, since I saw tha the majority of Oracle-related jobs and information are for UNIX-based servers.

It's true,
most of the oracle run on sun solaris, in my country. Very very few run on windows 2000. But, i think is wise to learn it from the unix platform. coz, if you want to get a job as oracle DBA, you have to be familiar with unix, if me, i will go for sun solaris. Fit into the environment , where most oracle run on.
Installing on windows server, is also not a bad choice, coz, sometimes, you also need to know, how oracle run on windows. But, put more effort on the unix.
Hope that you all will have a pleasant day ahead.
( HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE IN THIS SITE )

OK. That actually makes sense. I want to really know how to use it in both, since I believe it could just be good practise, however, I have very little UNIX exxperience, but I have used Linux for quite some time.
My questions for you now is, would it in any way be harder for me to learn Oracle on UNIX after I have learned it on Windows, and vice versa? What are the differences regarding the look and feel of it?

While, personally, i think, you have to spend more time on unix. Instead of windows.
Windows, i can say, it user friendly, much more easier to use, compare with unix. Coz, most of them are GUI, as long, you know their function, you can manage them.
Unix is different, although, now the version for unix, there are GUI Interface, most of the administrator, manage them throught commands.
Go for what the market and company are using. Solaris good to start off, from what i observe in my country, most of the oracle database are sitting on sun system.
You can go to sun website, to download, the OS, but somehow, you need to get oracle8i for sun system. Get osborne books for SCSA, learn it and practise it. There's another book for sun solaris i use, solaris system administratior guide, third edition by janice winsor.
With this two books, you should have no problem, be a sun system expert.
For oracle, i personally think, sybex books are good for oracle, there's plenty of labs for you to learn. Osborne books are also quite good for learning oracle.
When, you do selection for books, make sure, you understand, which books are suitable for you. And, you are able to understand it.
Not because, everyone tell you this books is good, and you follow the trend. Listen to your heart, and you should not have any problem, learning this two stuffs.
All the best in your learning, and hope that you can do well in it.
