would like some information

hello to all, I would like for you all to gelp me out on some computer hardware issures...I would like to know the difference between a cd-r, cd-rw, compared to just a cd. also...what purpose is a dvd, in relation to the other.....I want to take on a project of building, but I am a little confused about the purpose of having each of these drives or two, or just one to serve the purpose for all...any information will be appreciated...

The last one seems to be most up to date.
