what to expect $
I am the network engineer for my company and I work on many different companies networks. I have the oppertunity to learn databases. One of the guys I work with is training me in DB because networking and hardware is slow for us this time of year so I'm multi tasking. My question is that I seem to like DB as much as I do networking end of it but don't know what kind of money to expect if I specialize as a DBA. Also what kind of certs would I need? Any tips or advice on what books and study material I would be greatful.

DBA's usually make really good money. Certs I don't think are as crucial as in other areas, because some database work involves programming . . . a skill that is very hard to test on. But trying for your OCP in maybe SQL/PL might be a good place to start. MCDBA is also a thought if you want to use some MS database products.
