Question ATM and CRCs

Here is the scenario:

Using ATM.

Sending a large amount of data from one station to another.

ATM will break up the data into several cells.

Just for giggles, let's say that some of the cells are lost in the transmission.

Here is the question. When the receiving station is reassembling the data why does it check CRC instead of realizing there are cells missing in the sequence to be reassembled?

This is not a specific problem that I am having, just wondering if my understanding of ATM is correct.
