turned it on,amber to green, then lights out, is this good ( I do not have any nodes hooked up to the ports).

On a switch, the lights should go through their self-test sequence and then turn off if nothing is connected. Once you connect a device, the port should initialize and then stay green if there are no problems. As far as using hyper terminal for your console access, just make sure its configured for the correct com port and the settings are 9600, 8, none, and 1 if I remember correctly. You should be able to find out for sure by doing a quick search in your CCNA book or cisco.com. Have fun. Switches can be pretty amazing!!!!

the problem is there is nothing in the hyper terminal file.
1. My lap top does not hav a modem and there is no file for hyper terminal
2. My PC has a modum but nothing is in the H.T file, so now I am looking to download a terminal emulation program (freeware)

help?

In the CCNA book it will tell you what the light sequences mean. I believe (correct me if my memory is going) it checks each port internally (yellow from left to right) then if everything is good, depending on how you have selected the mode switch the lights will go to their run-time state (there are 3 modes that change how the lights react). If after the lights go from left to right there is a flashing set of yellow lights, you can look up what error you are getting.

You should be able to install hyperterminal even if you don't have a modem. Just goto add programs, select Windows Programs, it should be under communications.

You then just need a roll-over cable (you can purchase one or make your own, I made my own). You can get the pin-out from Cisco and purchase the stuff from radio shack or get a Cisco set of connectors and rollover cable. Cost will be about the same.

Components are pretty simple and it just hooks up to your serial port. To make your own it costs about $30.00 (you need to get some tools to do it, 10BaseT crimpers, DB insert crimper, cable and the ends)

In the end you will learn a lot if you do it yourself but if you get your hands on a rollover cable, it will be much easier and looks professional.

I downloded one last night, and it is prompting me
to hook up.

Parity - 0
Flow control - none

So my serch continues
(I can't wait to get in there and start configuring this bad boy )

other sectors of the real world are pulling me away from this good stuff - so I must be on my way

I have been advised to buy a 2500 series router

I on the other hand would like to get 5000 switch with a RSM

As I understand it the set based switches are being phased out - all new products will be CLI

On the back of my PC there are 2 serial ports
one with a small icon (box with 2 circles in it)
the other - no marks

The lap top has just one serial port with box with 2 circles in it

Just an FYI, if you looking for a 2500 router, I have one that I am looking to sell. I've got a lab I can work with at work so I don't really need one at home, plus the wife keeps bugging me to clean up "my room"

Just checked a system running Win98, the HyperTerminal is under Add/Remove Programs, then select Windows Setup Tab and it should show you a list of items. Select Communications and then hit details. HyperTerminal should be here, you can just select it and then hit Install.

As for the Com Port, you might need to goto your System under the Control Panel and make sure that you Com port is there and operational. If it isn't or it is having problems that might be the issue. Other then this, the software that you downloaded might not be working right with your setup or OS.

Without seeing the computer that is about all that I can tell you. There is always the possible issue of a conflict with other devices that should show up in the System dialog box, either an interrupt or base memory mapping issue. If you have changed your OS there are also some issues with these ports and proprietary systems which again should show up in the System dialog box in the Control Panel as you Com1 either not being present, conflicting settings, or a bad driver. If you are still having problems, I would recommend removing your serial port from the System Panel and allowing the Plug and Play 98 OS to find it again and load the drivers. Might be some problem in there that the OS cannot locate that might clear up if you re-install the drivers.
