please help configure my modem
I am using a PCI HSP 56K modem from PCtel to connect to my ISP but it can only connect at 31200bps. I have tried to make it connect at a higher speed by using the modem program in control panel but did not fix it. I selected CONNECT ONLY AT THIS SPEED, I also played with the send/receive buffer. I know my phone line and isp support connection at a higher speed as when I use another 56k external modem, it can connect at 44000bps.
My question is what else can I try ? I do not want to buy another modem. I know my celeron 800 Mhz CPU has enough power to drive this HSP 56 modem at a higher speed. Is using AT command my last resort? Actually, I did try ATS37=13 but still did not work out.
Everyone please help me, any suggestion is welcome.

Did you go into your com ports in device manager, from controll panel-system applet, and adjust your UART settings and then reboot?

My last post above was meant to say : thank you for your suggestion but latest driver was installed before my first post. It may lead some people to think that problem is fixed after the latest driver is installed but it is not. I am waiting for other suggestions. The first responder's effort is appreciated.

Thanks Joe. I do not think my UART is configurale and there is no COM PORT module in control panel. Yes, I did reboot. The install program uses com5, I think because it is a PCI device as mentioned above.

You should be able to configure the com ports in device manager. I forgot to say to go into device manager after I typed controll panel (from the system applet).
The modem is using a com port, and the UART controlles the speed of serial communications.

Modem string
I dont know the modem string for your modem but I have a US Robitics 56k modem and I have added the string "AT&F&B1" and it kicks up my speed on my modem. Actually the "&B1" is the string that does that.
Your welcome to try "&B1" to speed up your modem.
Good Luck!

Especially winmodems like motorola, hsp. They can be pretty crappy, if you want a good modem look for hardware modem instead of software modem. As well the speed indication on winmodems can be wrong. Best to dl a 1 meg file somewhere and check your speed. 56K should get your around a 4.3-4.8k connection on a good phoneline.
You can also try ini strings like exar07 suggested. Go to http://www.modemhelp.org/ for a complete list of ini strings for various modems.
