i have a 8.4 GB IDE HD.....i am only gonna be running win 2k server...any suggestions for partition my HD's for best performance!

I haven't exactly worked with Win2K for very long now. But just my opinion:

Install Server on a partition that is about 2 Gig in size. This will be big enough for the initial installation and also leave room for service packs later on.

It depends on what you intend to do with the drive.

Since you installed server, you should use at least 2G for the boot partition. Also if you keep the remaining disk as free space, you can upgrade the disk to dynamic and implement striped, spanned, mirrored, or Raid 5 volumes. The last two are only possible if you add another disk. If you decide that you would like to save all your files under the boot partition (volume) drive letter, you can upgrade the disk to dynamic and mount a volume under the boot volume.

Personally, I prefer to format a 2G partition, and I can play with the rest however I feel. If you format the entire drive as 1 partition, you will probably find yourself reinstalling the os on a smaller partition so that you can play around.

If your just starting out with Win2K, it really doesn't matter. You will probably be like the rest of us, and find yourself reinstalling the os several times over. Each time you reinstall, you can change your configuration.

if i do a 2GB partition for boot win 2k server drive...and leave the rest to install my third party program...will that make my HD disk access faster?

My guess would be no. It wouldn't make your HD access any faster because it is using the same HD. I believe that if you have two different HD's and created a volume on the second HD, then accessed an application that was stored in that volume, it could speed up your access compared to what you would have had with one HD.


Since the OS would be using one HD, and then the application the second.

i wont be getting another HD for sure....so should i use all of my 8.4 GB space and install win 2k server on it?! i am gonna be using this for home use also...so its kinda permanent until xp comes out

Better separate the OS & programs in their own partitions.

how is making a 2gb partition for win 2k server and the rest for third party program good for managability and flexibility? what are the disadvantage for using all the space?

why cant i use all the space in my only HD and install everything there..whts teh difference for partitioning

I would make 3 partitions.
1. 2 Gig partition for the operating system formated with NTFS
2. Application partition. It can be however big you want it and format it with Fat 32
3. a Data partition using the rest of the space formated with NTFS
This way gives you some practice using both file systems together.
When you get it up and running right you can make a Ghost image of it to do a quick restore from.
