I am preparing to finally take this exam next week and can't seem to grasp the concept of the ARC paths. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to memorize or learn this? I also have a hard time with Client services and gateway services and when you use them or use NWLink. Help me out please?

Hi
GSNW makes Netware resources avaiable to ordinary Microsoft network clients but CSNW works only with Windows NT machines to make them act as native clients to Netware servers elsewhere on the network.CSNW is only available on an NT Workstation,an NT Server ships with GSNW (notice when you install GSNW it also installs the client services as well by default,so that the server can act as a gateway to a Netware Server for machines running Win 95/98,3.x and also being able to connect to the Netware Server as a client in its own right. When connecting to a Netware server according to Microsoft you must use NWLINK as this protocol is compatable with IPX/SPX which is what Netware networks use).Right now onto ARC paths. The first element in the ARC path describes the disk controller. If it says SCSI this means that the controller is either a SCSI controller or that the IDE controller has its Bios DIABLED.If it says MULTI then this means that the controller has its Bios ENABLED.The number immediately following SCSI or MULTI identifies the position of the controller within the system, numbered ordinally. Thus the first controller is numbered (0) the second is (1) and the third is (2).The second number along DISK ( ) refers to the hard disk that the system and boot partition resides on(notice this is only used when the controller has no Bios translation capabilities ie:when SCSI is used). The third number RDISK ( ) refers to the hard disk number only when MULTI is used (BIOS ENABLED).The last number PARTITION ( ) refers to the partition on which the system files reside.Unlike the other terms the first partition is (1) the second is (2) and the third is (3) and so on.
eg: scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partitio
n(1)
In this example the system has a SCSI controller or its Bios DISABLED.Its using controller 1(remember to count as 1=0).Its using hard disk number 2(1=2).rdisk is not used as this Bios diabled so can be ignored.and the system files reside on partition 1(remember that 1=1 2=2 3=3 and so on with this element).
On the exam you can usually work out the answer by figuring out whether its SCSI or MULTI as this is what they try to catch you out with.Hope this helps you some.
All the best to everyone and good luck for the future.

Madmax has explained when to use CSNW,GSNW and NWlink rather well, so I'll not say anything about that. I have just been learning ARC parths, and have made a table, which might help you.
Multi/Scsi(x) Disk(x) rdisk(x) Partition(x)
Multi(x)
-Any other than Scsi or
-Scsi with Bios enabled
Scsi(x)
-Scsi with Bios disabled
Disk(x)
-Used only with Scsi option
-therefore if Multi always = (0)
-=Bus number, starts at(0)
rdisk(x)
-Used only with Multi option
-therefore if Scsi always = (0)
-=Nr of Disk, starts at(0)
Partition(x)
-Used with Multi or Scsi option
-=Nr of Partition where system files reside
-Sarts at 1
I'm sorry but I can't put it in a table for you here(not enough space), but I always prefer learning in this way it makes it easy for me.

Thank you very much MAdmax & Suzie. I am going ahead and taking this test on friday and am boning up on everything. I think I now feel comfortable with those ARC paths, on the transenders question regarding ARC's, I am getting them correct now. Today I will focus my studies on Netware to get it down. I still am having some problems with it. Thanks for the help. I'll be posting again on friday and let you know how i did. Thx

Oh man, how clear everything is to me now, ARC paths, Netware, RAS and RAID levels. Man I can believe I now understand all this crap! Finally. I feel real confident now. I will definetly try to take this test on friday. Man I didn't half as much when I took and passed Workstation (866). I am passing all my practice tests, transenders, exam essencials, Transdumper. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the advice Madmax, I am using ICEMANs dump, supposed to be a updated version of XXXMAN's dump, but I will look at both. I heard thought that XXMAns dump has a bunch of errors. Is that true. I was using the FARVO guide and those test questions have errors in them. Any thoughts?
