I just read a newsletter from Brainbuzz that said CNX is dead. The consortium is disbanded. It is being replaced by several other certs. Trip over the Brainbuzz and catch the buzz...

The CNX program is no more. CNX or Certified Network Expert was awarded for demonstrated proficiency in protocol analysis and use of protocol analysis tools. There were three levels of certification: CNX-Associate, CNX, and Master CNX. It was supervised as a vendor-neutral program by the CNX Consortium, which included the AG Group, Agilent Technologies, Sniffer Technologies, and the Optimized Engineering Corporation. This industry-recognized certification had been revamped in recent years and was making a comeback after some period of neglect. Sniffer was doing the program maintenance and Optimized Engineering was handling the web site.

In the last year or so, Sniffer Technologies was acquired by Network Associates, Inc., and the AG Group and Optimized Engineering were acquired by WildPackets. NAI and WildPackets produce competing Packet Analysis tools: NAI sells Sniffer and WildPackets sells EtherPeek. For no publicly announced reason, the CNX Consortium was dissolved in mid-February, 2001 and the CNX certification program ended. However, the CNX program is being reincarnated in two other certification programs run by former members of the CNX consortium.

Network Associates is creating the Sniffer Certified Professional Program, with three levels:
SCP - Sniffer Certified Professional (1 exam)
SCE - Sniffer Certified Expert (SCP + 2 exams)
SCM - Sniffer Certified Master (SCE + 3 exams)

WildPackets is building the Network Analysis Expert program, also with three levels of certification:
AATech - Applied Analysis Technician
PAS - Protocol Analyzer Specialist
NAX - Network Analysis Expert

Obviously, neither of these programs is vendor neutral. Both NAI and WildPackets produce good network analysis tools, so their programs are geared toward their products. NAI’s Sniffers are excellent equipment with a very wide range of uses, but they’re a bit pricey. WildPacket’s EtherPeek has a lower price tag and runs on either Windows or Macintosh, but it is restricted to fewer protocols.

Both of the new certifications should be ready about April 1, 2001 and holders of the CNX certification will receive benefits towards both NAX and SSCP. You can learn more about these programs at http://www.sniffer.com/education/cnx.asp and http://www.nax2000.com .
