I just passed the CCNA but I want to be able to go to an interview and tell them I have router experience. Can anyone tell me where I can get the best router experience on the web. I do have the sybex E-trainer but I don't know if that is good enough. Thanks

You can go to the Cisco Lounge Downloads section. There are three different router sims there. However, I don't know if you can really classify sims as having hands on experience. Your best bet is to either purchase a small 2500 series router and play with that, or find yourself an entry level job that is willing to train.

Companies don't typically consider home labs as "experience", but that's not to say you don't get some credit for the initiative of setting one up and teaching yourself.

thanks for the replies. Do you think the main thing is to prove myself in an interview and be able to let them know I could set up a router. Because through the simulator I have at home I can do that with ease. Anyway thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, like all simulators, they lack a few commands. Not every simulator is going to allow you to learn what it's like to upgrade the IOS. Or what to do when your router comes up with the boot> prompt. Not to mention, in all honesty, configuring a Cisco router is one of the easiest things in the world to do. I could probably teach my 10 year old sister to do it. The complication comes when you have to know WHAT to configure the router with, and a simulator isn't going to give you that.

blue baron can you show me a good link of what to do when your router is at a boot>???

A had a switch do that to me the other day and I was totally lost...... I didnt know why. I thought maybe becuase i was tryint to tftp a new image and save the image i had. I though maybe somehow the switch crashed midway and then put me ina boot prompt or something. Pretty weird I only had like 6 commands that i could use and none of them seemed to help my situation......

thanks

Generally when this happens you need to do one of two things:

1) Check your config register. Ensure that it
is set to 0x2102 (or whichever confreg you
need it set to. If you to the Lounge
Downloads section, you will see a free
utility that will decode your confreg
setting and tell you what it means)

2) Ensure that you are booting from a valid
flash file. If you are using a PCMCIA card
for your image, be sure to enter "boot
system slot0:", provided that's where the
card is.

It would also help me to know what kind of switch it is. However, the answers I've provided above should cover the most common cause of this problem.
