When configuring a backup interface do I need to have seperate BRI int or can I use a serail Int? And if I use a serial Interface as the Backup what does this connect to a Seperate TA device?

Yes you are exactly correct. If you use a serial interface you need a TA and if you use a BRI or PRI you do not. Cisco has examples on their web page, but most concentrate on BRI/PRI interfaces, of course.
