Question

HI guys,

Just wanted to find out if there is any real demand for CIW out there. I tried to search for it on several job site but hardly any jobs pop up as opposed to MCSE where tons to job posting are there. Does this mean CIW is not really that hot and maybe not worth wasting time on?

Just want to find out what are the experiences of others out there.

Thank you,

Aneesh

On the other hand..

On the other hand, MCSE ain't worth much these days. Definitely, not what it once was anyway.

As in most cases, it's supply and demand. MCSE supply has gone way up so it's value has gone down.

Now, CIW may not be a household word, but it is recognized by a lot of big names and is gaining respect. Supply is minimal at this point. Once CIW has reached a critical mass, I think those that already have it will find themselves in a good position, especially the application developers.

Until then, you may have to explain the CIW to potential employers, but it can only help you in the long run. I mean you should never just put MCSE or CIW on a resume. You put down that your an expert in javascript, perl, asp, java, etc and have taken these exams leading to CIW certification which proves your level of comptency in each area and follow that with a URL(s) to examples of your work.

Of course, whether any of these certs is worth the cost of the training or training materials is another topic.

Demand

It may not be a household name, but the enrollment for CIW classes has increased greatly in the past few month. Which is great for those who have it. And more government job rehab programs are placing people into CIW.

Lightbulb

Just to add a different twist: I have been getting calls because there is a great demand for CIW Certified Instructors. I almost have all that paperwork done and I am eager to get the low down on this company that annoys so many people (low responses -- books, etc.).

I think everyone is right about the CIW not being that popular but in my opinion it is more the fact that programmers/designers have never embraced the certification. They demand proof of what you can do -- programs and sites -- not certifications. However, the logo might get you that valuable interview, just have the proof that you know what you are doing available.

Same thing has happened all along to VB programmers, low demand for MCSD's, high demand for VB programmers...

CIW not well Recognized? Who is?

So what webmaster certification is more well known than CIW? This is just an industry without a leading certification. At least not yet.

A couple years ago I earned Novell's CIP as an Internet Architect. I learned much, but nobody had ever heard of it. Sound familiar?

Now, Novell has rolled it's CIP certification into CIW's program. We CIPs get dual certification as CIWs, although I have reasons to believe that Novell's CIP is much more difficult than CIW. CIP-Internet architect requires a total of 11 tests (CNE is a prerequisite), but the corresponding CIW only requires 4 tests.

This merger is good for CIW-certified techs for two reasons. First, it brings a fair number of techs into the CIW fold, which makes it more popular and thus more well known. Second, will provide employers with a positive CIW experience, since dual CIP/CIW techs are very trained and experienced. I expect that CIW will gain in both popularity and prestige.

So if you're looking for a Webmaster cert that will pay off, well, life is always a crapshoot - you pay your money and you take your chances. At least the CIW odds are looking pretty good right now.

Well said! BUT, I still don't think that programmer's embrace certifications as much as Networking types. I don't know why, maybe the ability to program is untestable. I mean how can you know if someone will understand how to tackle a problem. I see it in the classroom all the time. Some people know the stuff, could pass the test, but they just don't get it. The can't see a solution unless it is spelt out for them, and then the can code the hell out of it.

It is a mindset I have seen. In my humble opinion many programmer's just don't embrace certifications. Maybe that is why there were only 1300 MCP+SB's -- the easiest Microsoft Cert to obtain.

That all said, I agree that CIW is the best thing in town. I love pursuing certifications to give me something to set my goals against. I just don't think it helps in the job market that much.
