Thumbs up

Hello Braveheart

NIC, or network interface card, whether on a server or PC is addressed using it's MAC address, so this will sit on the datalink layer, layer2.

The hard disk and processor are components of a server or PC and do not really have a direct link with networking - you could say the same for RAM and ROM, but if they are anywhere in the OSI stack, they reside at layer also.

Cheers
Hippo

I can see how you'd be confused.

Although a router is generally considered to be a layer 3 device, it actually peforms layer 2 functions (frame decap and re-encapsulation), layer 4 functions (filtering by TCP using ACL's), and layer 3 functions too.

For now, your sanity, and CCNA, just know that routers are layer 3, switches and bridges are layer 2, and hubs/repeaters are layer 1.

The rest will come clear(er) as you progress.

Hope this helps.
