Now you know the one of the main forces that drives people to IT certification is the pay. I still have to understand why so many people are going for the CCIE which takes roughly about a year to prepare for, rather than just take about 4-6 months and get an Oracle DBA certification which pays more requiring less experience. Today your average Oracle DBA with 3 years experience makes roughly $100K/year while your average CCIE with same experience makes the same thing. I also believe their is higher demand for Oracle DBAs. I want us to discuss this topic very well 'cos I know it ain't just me. Let's do 2 things. Go to Dice.com and search for CCIE and watch the results, then search for Oracle DBA and watch the # of results compared to that for CCIE.

You are talking apples and bananas:

Oracle DBA's have to know Unix inside and out. CCIE's do not need any Unix knowledge. Have you ever tried Unix administration? I haven't either but I hear it's no fun. Ok, then let's throw in an industrial size Oracle database to design and/or administer, and you have heart attack soup.

Oh, and one more thing: if the mission critical database crashes, you get a pink paycheck.

I'll stick to the CCIE, thanks...

DBA is good to know and making it way up in today high demand on the Web.

However, this is 2 difficult issure here!

You cannot compare CCIE to DBA.

Are u talking about Money or Potential vs Time?

I'm talking about Money of course. Thats what it all boils down to. You make less of an investment to get an Oracle DBA cert which is in more demand and pays more compared to CCIE. I have not seen a CCIE yet that makes 215K/year but there are Oracle DBAs all over that make that much.

Have you been to California. CCIE over there makes about 250k plus. Even though you decide to pick CCIE. In no way you are going to become a CCIE in one year.

I rest my case then. You agree that it even takes longer than 1 year to achieve CCIE status. You can get Oracle DBA in less than 6 months though to make as much money. Now tell me which is a more sensible investment of time/resources

A lot depends on what you want to do and how happy you want to be also. Trust me I used to have to get up and go do a job that was not interesting to me and I hated it I was not very productive. Now I am in a field were I love , networking and wans its so fun . It can be hard and long hours but I love it. Not every person can sit down and work on databases they can be a bear try to get involved Micrsoft access for a while its easy to learn the basics fast in it but after you get deep into it you will find it can get hard and then think about Oracle. I can bet you it would take longer than 4 months to get the cert. CCIE is a very tuff exam and unless you have many years experience you will not pass it in under a year. Remember you have to love what you do to be happy.

This is my first time here, on this forum but have something to say that might interest some people. I deal with CCIE's and CCNP's nearly 100% of the day, as I am in a telcom company and hold a good position, make over 75K. I do not ahve any certifications, just a good mouth, smooth talker, can convince u I know what I am saying , even If i dont. I think no matter if you ahve a CCIE or DBA , it depends how u sell yourself to get the TOP $$. Personally, I know I might not last in long run, but for short term I am collecting my cash. I would like to get certified, I am only 20 and now the question is what's the easy way out, CCIE OR DBA. Sounds to me its DBA. I never looked in DBA but listening to you guys it sounds like something that will be easier of a task than CCIE. What do you guys think, It makes me laugh when people have CCNA and CCNP and I interview them. This is a shame. Again, the question is which one of them takes the shortest. I have no clue about ORACLE TRACK but I am aware of CRISCO track so any COMMENTS ??????

Hi GQ,

I think that the MCDBA would be faster. I am considering the MCDBA too, but something in me wants to go the CCIE route. Microsoft Access is a good way to get an idea of databases. Oh yeah, we NEED to talk. I need advice on how to be a smooth talker like you. My guess is that you are probably tall, which gives the impression of authority. I am suprised by your age because my age is a problem for me on interviews, along with other things. How did you get such a good job with little experience. Help ME!
