Howdy,
I am trying to get in Oracle side of the house. I have no idea where to start from. All this time I have been focusing on networking side of it. Can you guys tell me where to start from and what are the best resources or any sites you guys know of? I would also like to know if Oracle is any easier than Cisco stuff? Do we have to know Unix ? Do we have to know Java? Also what is the job scope if you are jsut starting without any experience? Considering the fact That currently I am makin 70K + in another field. Any advice would help.
Thanks,
GQ

You don't have to know Java or Unix, although there is an Oracle Java Developer track. I couldn't say if it's easier than Cisco.
Oracle has some good stuff on their site, including software downloads. I've also had the best luck with the Oracle Press books, but there are others.
There's no doubt that the earning power of an experience Oracle Developer or DBA is one of the highest in the IT industry, but in the beginning you will probably have to settle for less than you are making now if you want to switch over. Or at least that's my guess... I haven't tried job hunting yet

Hi GQ,
Just relax. Getting into ORACLE is not so difficult as u r making it so difficult as you are making it sound to yourself. Yeah the fact that so far your experience is majorly into Networking is perfectly true. So of co8urse it'll be a bit different for you. But all in all I feel, it'll be a really enriching experience.
As far knowledge of JAVA/UNIX etc. is concerned, it is not absolutely essential to have knowledge of this kind. BUt it'll be good if you have this knowledge already. In case u are ignorant about them u would do well to first get a good grip over ORACLE programming toa certain extent rather than spending the precious time on JAVA/UNIX.
Compensation wise, it might be that u ned to take a dip in the salary. BUt vertainly, once you have about 2 years experience, you'll be able to be earn more athn a DBA with same experience but less knowledge/exposure of Networking than you. In a nutshell, you may start at a lower figure than u r currently getting, but will certainly grow much faster.
All the best-n-have a nice time
Atul
