I have a question about server. For some reason I cannot get it to load up on my PC that is a HP. 700mhz 64meg ram. I have been able to get it to load on 2 other machines that are older than this. I get it to load and install find but when it gets to the windows start up screen it freezes. I can get it to come up in safe mode on this machine. Any reasons why???

Win2K server will load on 64MB RAM but it takes at least 128MB RAM to get it to run smoothly. Memory is getting really affordable these days You really need more. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a hardware issue, possibly video. Something isn't being initialized correctly. I had the same problem on a machine that I had two NICs in. I removed one, then added it back after finishing the install. Works fine now. Check the HCL. Remember that booting in safe mode loads just basic video and basic drivers so that the OS will run. Since you can run in safe mode, but not in 'regular' mode, try remove devices until you find the problem. Also, check for updated W2K drivers for your ad-ons. If you are on a network, disconnect from the lan, unhook phone line, disconnect printer and any usb devices. Reduce it to a basic machine with keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
I've got 3 P200 test machines networked with 64M in them running W2K Advanced Server, so memory isn't the issue, but usnretired is right, it will perform much better with 128M.

Have you referenced the setup log files? The Action Log will list actions in chronological order, and includes actions such as copying files and creating registry entries. It also logs entries that are written to the error log. The action log is stored in the file Setupact.log and the error log is stored in Setuperr.log. The error log contains descriptions of any errors that occur during setup, along with note indicating how severe it is. All of these files can be found in %systemroot%.

Good call Cadman,
I had the same problem after I installed a PCI video card. It kept hanging on the windows startup screen. The card is on the HCL and Win2K drivers are installed. I had to disable the onboard video RAM cache and set the CMOS to start with the PCI Video first. Finally got the system to boot properly. But then the "Settings" tab on my display console went away. Thank goodness for the Resource Kit and QuickRes .

Slinky, you're right. You should always look in the setup/event logs. They should show were the system stopped. I just hope what it says is comprehensible.
usnretired, I learned the hard way on an Acer way back when about disabling onboard video. Good one, I didn't think of that.
crazyska, any specs about this HP 700? Onboard video, sound, modem, etc. that might conflict with addon cards? Are you upgrading an existing OS? Or doing a clean install?

Ok yes it has an on board Video Card('m not sure what it is. Everything is Onboard. I have added a NetGear NIC and a Voodoo 3000. They are Both PCI cards. I have a netgear on this PC and I have 2000 pro setup and at one time had 2000 server setup on here with out any problems. I am trying to do it as a clean install. The only thing that I could think that would be causing the problems would be the voodoo 3000? I'm not sure but everything is standard for this machine. I just started studying and just wanted to network my 2 pc's here using server and pro.
thanks for the help

Go the Voodoo website and see if there are any known problems with the card with certain os. They will usually have a section all about that. They should have all the new drivers should you need them. I am not trying to insult your intelligence, but it is always wise to research the card with your system before purchasing. You wouldn't believe how many times I have come across that problem. Hope this helps.
