Which subnet method for CCDA? 2n-2 or 2n?

Getting mixed information on which method the CCDA uses for determining the number of subnets in a given range. Does the CCDA use the 2n-2 method or just the 2n?

you should just learn subnetting
it does not matter what the test wants
