file sharing between Win98 and Win2000

Hello all.
I am new to this forum an d i hope someone will help me solve my problem

i have been given th responsibility to administer a LAN. However. in the network there are PCs with Windows 2000 professonal and others with Win98 and one with Xp.
my problem is that when i browse the Network via network neighbouhood, i can view PCs with similar OS. that is, if browse from a PC with OS Win98, i can see only the Pcs with Win98 and not those with win2000. the same problem arises when i browse the network using a PC with win2000.

So, is there a way where i can view the shared files on a win98 PC from a Win2000 PC.

First I'd check if they are using the same workgroup name, 98 does not support domains. If thats not it, I would take a look at the IP address and check if your all on the same IP configuration. I have them all working fine here with wireless, the only thing is 2000 ask you for admin & password before you are able to see any shared files on 2000.

98 machines don't actually join a domain. You just have the ability to log onto a domain using Client for Microsoft Networks.

When a user logins to a domain via a Win98 neither machine nor user GPO does apply.

The only thing it does is autheticate the user for network access of resources files/printers etc. Security from a GPO can not be applied from a Win 98 machine.

Goto Start | Run and type \\Windows98MachineName
This will show all the shares on the Windows98 machine in Windows Explorer.

It is unfortunate that people have come to rely so much on the browser service (Network Neighborhood) it has nothing to do with the actual networking, it only shows (an often distorted) view of what it finds. Much better to rely on the actual networking components.

John,

User based group policies do not apply to 98 machines. Prezbedard's original post is correct.

You even got your reply incorrect.
For Windows NT 4.0 and later, the .pol file is named Ntconfig.pol and is created using the System Policy Editor for the specific operating system.
For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Microsoft� Windows� Millennium Edition (Windows Me), the .pol file is named Config.pol and must be created by using the System Policy Editor for that operating system.

Group policy does not create a Config.pol file to be downloaded to 98 machines.

You are thinking of system policies back in the NT days.

You really need to bone up on your technical knowledge. I've corrected many of your other posts as well in other forums.

You giving incorrect information to people doesn't help them learn.

Momasoud,

You need to review the share permissions on each folder. In a mixed environment like yours, you'll need to give the Everyone group full control on the share permission. On the Windows 98 machines, they need to log on with a username that is also on the 2000 or XP machine. When 98 tries to connect to a share, it only asks for a password, it will only use the username that is given when you first log on the computer.
