Another networking question
Well, i have my wireless network all up and running, here is how it is set up!
I have 2 computers that are running Windows XP, and one that is running 98.
These are all connected to my D-link d1-524 router via either ethernet or wireless.
The computer that is running Windows 98 has internet connection sharing installed, and it provides the other computers with the internet. The problem? That computer is only a pentium 1 200mhz, and it is much to slow. When my sisters try to use it to play rollercoaster tycoon or starcraft, my internet connection drops and lags.
I would like to find some sort of standalone external 56k modem that i could just plug into my router. Is there a such thing?
We have 2 phone lines, and DSL or cable is not avalible here.

Why not just use internet connection sharing on one of your XP machines?
I haven't used telephone modems in a long time, but I think they do sell external telephone modems.

Until you get another modem, easiest thing (and something that will tick your sisters off ) is to change the priority of the internet explorer process in taskmanager (of 98 machine) to high. Realtime will jam up everything but your process. High will simply slow down their programs.
You can create a small batch program to do this automatically & then put it into your startup folder. There's no way to change priority permanently in Windows (at this time). It has to be done w/ each startup/logon.
batch:
start /high "c:\program files\Internet explorer\iexplore.exe"
(..or the web browser you're using. Quotes necessary if spaces in directory names.)
Have fun.

Hey Joel. Why not post your modem/router question in the networking forum? There are a lot of experienced networkers over there. I just don't have a lot of expertise w/ the hardware yet..just networking "software" & theory.
In my case, I have a simple 2 pc LAN using a crossover with Server 2K3 & XP installed. No router yet. I don't use the XP one for the internet as I'm not sure how to create a proxy yet. I dial up with an external BestData modem. I chose that one as I can use it with Linux as well as Windows. I didn't base my choice on the hardware like a lot of techs would.
Have fun!

There won't be any conflicts as long as you know how to configure them properly. A some modems can act as a router in some issues but its NOT a router! Try IT!

ur pc is P1 at 200Mhz, right. then u don;t have to use it for connection sharing. the speed of the pc count, the memory and also its resoucses on the pc. so better use the xp one and take not that xp give goood connection sharing capacity then 98.

If you want to participate in these forums, please try to type more legibly. No offense, its just near impossible to read!
I would do that, but the p1 is the computer that is near a phone line. I am trying to find an old Pentium 2 or something to use...
