One thing I've learned, and someone else posted a similar comment, is that you have to have people skills to make more money. Being technically superior without those skills will only get you so far.
If you don't have good communication skills, then you will stay in the lower income brackets. Managing highly technical people is a challenge all by itself. Some days are better than others, but that's why I get paid more money than my staff, to deal with the issues they don't want to.

Desktop support in South Carolina. $43k with profit sharing. We also get to cash in some of our vacation hours. I guess that supposedly balances the lack of training and tuition reimbursement. 7 years of experience.
MCP, CLP (Lotus cert), A+, Network+, i-Net+, CIW Associate. BA in Computer Science. Currently taking CISCO courses at night.

I will agree with previous posts. Bad people skills will get you nothing but less pay. Knowing this stuff is important, but explaining this stuff to someone who doesn't know it can be harder than learning it (and more frustrating). BTW, I consider myself lucky to be where I am (and happy) even though I feel I could go to a larger market and make more. Good luck.

Systems Technician
- 7 yrs experience
- 67-70K(this year)
Started out as a PC Tech, now moving towards a Senior Systems Technician position, experience in PC/LAN break-fix, wireless, network admin, Tablet PCs, Citrix, and Telecom break-fix
- Woodland Hills, CA (near L.A.)
- Working on A.A. in Computer Networking and MCSE/2000
Certs: A+, Net+, MCP/Win2000, MCSE/WinNT 4
Recovered 60K in back-pay overtime last year for the previous three years. Employer was violating Wage Order 17 in California, which says that techs are non-exempt (hourly) employees and employer had classified me as an exempt (salary) employee.
My advice to anyone out there who thinks that they are misclassified as exempt is to check their own state labor laws and see if they pre-empt Federal Law. Currently, Federal Law says that you can be an exempt employee in the PC field if your employer pays you at least $27.62/hr. California mandates at least $45.84/hr., which overrides Federal Law. I had to file a wage claim to force my employer to comply with the Law.
