Systems Engineer, about $55K. I'm probably doing better than most - in spite of the economy.
- Bachelor's in English
- 3 Associate degrees in various Computer Science disciplines.
- A+, N+, CDIA+, S+, HTI+, Proj+, i-N+
- MCSE NT 4, MCDST, almost MCSA 2003
- CNE and MCNE Novell 5 & 6
- A couple other odds and ends certs.
- Don't forget, about 7 years experience in IT.
HOWEVER, all of the above would be meaningless alone. I am also told I present myself well to others, and I am a team player.
I've known too many very excellent techs whose careers are hindered because they are not effective communicators, and/or they are perceived as horses' rear-ends.
An ability to show that I am willing to learn (by a track record of education), and my interpersonal communication have both contributed to my success. The job I'm in now remained unfilled for a year - although there were many applicants and interviewees before me. My boss told me he was continually unimpressed with the personalities and/or willingness to learn of prior candidates. He isn't the first manager to express the above, and I've spoken with several recruiters who've expressed the same frustrations.
