I understand basically what it does, but my Cisco study book spends pages and pages on it in detail. It is confusing to say the least. Do I have to know it in such detail.

Yeah pages 53-63. Maybe the Sybex book explains it clearer. I'm finding the Cisco books to be like Microsoft books - More technical and detailed. I'll come back to it later. I still have 2 months to study on it.

Spanning tree is complicated, but fully understanding it will save you many problems if properly used in a LAN design. Read the stuff. Move on and then come back to it many times. If you want more info Darth always provides great links, but if you prefer books, get the "Cisco LAN Switching" CCIE level book for a very in depth explanation. This is a great keeper book for many things.
