Today I successfully passed the CEH, ethical hacking exam. I found the exam challenging and very rewarding. I give the EC-Council full points on the type of material covered and the range of topics and tools covered. I used the official ethical hacking course material text book. Other then the random spaces between letters in some words it was a very good read. The book was detailed and easy to understand. The book is almost 900 pages so there is a lot to take in.

I understand that saying that you are an ethical hacker does not hold much weight in the security industry. However CEH is one of the few exams that teaches you what tools hackers use, how to use them and when to use them in each phase of the system penetration. I benefited a lot from completing the exam. As people know hackers are very clever and cunning and every little bit of information helps to reduce the damage that they can cause. The more knowledge we have the less powerful they become in this era where knowledge is power.

If you pair up the CEH certification with other security certifications you will benefit greatly. If you only have completed the CEH certification and expect to get into the security industry only with that one certification then you will be mistaken.

Overall I highly recommend sitting for the CEH exam. Also note that in March version 4 of the exam will be released.

I didn’t take any courses; I only used the EC-Council official ethical hacking course material text book. For some strange reason throughout the book various words have random spaces between certain characters. For example, A sent ence my loo k like this one for ex ample.

It’s not too bad, I got use to it. I read the sentence and did not focus on the individual words. Grammar was not too bad unlike what some people have reported. The main thing is that everything you need to know is in the text book which is a very good thing. I enjoyed reading the book. If you have complete the CISSP then you will find the CEH to be interesting and enjoyable because it gives you hands on experience to tools that hackers and pen testers use which a lot of certifications don’t offer. Also have a look at the mile2.com website as they offer training on CEH and they also offer training on their own certification called Certified Penetration Testing Professional, CPTP.

You should also post some information about the CISSP exam, how you found it, what you used to study etc.

Curious if you (like me) just signed up for the exam on Prometric. I was reading through the EC-Council website and they list eligibility requirements for sitting for CEH exam. They list their CEH course as a prequisite (no surprise), but if you do self-study or have relevant work experience, you're supposed to fax in an application, supporting materials & justification, etc.

I attended Mile2's CPTS course a couple months ago, which I think would satisfy the training requirement. But for the heck of it, I was able to register online with Prometric for EC0-310 today, no problemo.

Just curious if they are really taking this eligibility requirement stuff serious or not....

I completed the application form and faxed through all my supporting details to the EC-Council. About a week later a received an email which contained a voucher. I had to quote the voucher number when I registered with Prometric. I wouldn’t have been able to register for the exam otherwise.

Even though you have registered for the exam without a voucher I would still complete an application form. There would be nothing worse then if you passed the exam and your certificate was withheld because you didn’t complete the application form.

Since you have completed the CPTS course and I assume security is part of your work, completing the application form would just be a formality.

Also when will you be taking the exam and did you use the recommended study material?
