Hi,

I’m having a DNS issue. I’m doing this from the cmd prompt to a server and domain I did not setup. I’m just trying to pin-point what it might be.

I’m getting something similar to the following:

>ping appserver.domain1.xyz.com

uknown host

>ping –a 10.90.5.80

pinging appserver.domain1.xyz.com

reply from 10.90.5.80

>ping appserver

pinging appserver.de.xyz.com

reply from 10.90.5.80

>ping appserver.de.xyz.com

pinging appserver.de.xyz.com

reply from 10.90.5.80


As you can see I’m getting different names back when I am pinging the server name and IP. This naming problem is occurring for all 40 users at this company

I think the dns records may be wrong and the cache needs to be flushed or the old records removed or there is something wrong with the suffixing. It is hard to pin-point from the cmd prompt.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what the problem could be.

Flush the DNS cache on the client (ipconfig /flushdns) then try pinging the server again and see if you get the same results.

If so, it's the DNS server. Find out the correct name of the server and delete all the incorrect entries in DNS.

How did things work out, nero?

P.S. Does it have anything to do with a redundant DNS server for load balancing or a secondary zone? That's what I would think of first. However, I'm a newbie to DNS.
