Hi Mat P,

for some reason the original message is 'closed' to new posts.

You said that it took you a couple of minutes to find an answer, someone else said it took them 3 minutes...

it takes me way longer than that to find anything usefull on Cisco's site or the doc CD so my query is: what did you type and what location did you start from?

If I start at Cisco's main screen and type a word into the search box it gives me tons of sales stuff.

I've tried doing the same from a different screen (I think it was under the support tab or something) and it just gives me a list of kit to choose from.

So, basically, how do you conduct a search for redundancy on a 6500 switch?

Great question.

I didn't search, I normally use the doc CD, for anything related to commands or configurations - only when I have exhausted these options do I search CCO. It has some great examples on it and is well worth mastering - I only mastered it when studying for my CCIE as this was the only tool available in the lab, I wish I'd done it years before.

My top tip for the doc CD (N.B. not CCO)is don't use the search facility.

Here's a click by click way of finding the redundancy info -

The doc CD can be found on the home page, right hand side called "Technical Documentation" - This is what used to be issued with each router as a CD, they don't anymore.

For CCNP there are two key areas, routing and switching (there may now be others, it's been a while). At the top of the page there are several drop boxes, the important ones are "Catalyst Switches" or "Cisco IOS Software". Were talking about Catalysts at the moment, so select that followed by Catalyst 6000/6500. Notice that the 2950 is here for CCNA info.

Looking at this, one of the titles is Catalyst Operating System Documentation for the Supervisor Engine and MSFC, followed by software versions - I didn't know which version so picked the latest (initially I got it wrong by following the Installation and configuration documentation).

I then selected "Software Configuration Guide" and found an option called "Configuring Redundancy" along with lots of other useful info. Where the answer to the original question can be found.


The IOS Software section is slightly different, I think it is structured much better. Browse through it, you will see it has two parts, configuration guides and command references. If I have a vague idea I'll select the master index, and hit Ctrl F and search for keywords (not the online search). The configuration guides show typical examples of how to configure every feature, the command references show defaults, and also have a worked example of every command.

yes, thanks.

It's been a while since I bought a new router so I haven't got an up to date CD. In fact, it's been a while since I've seen my Docs CD, it must be around the office somehwere.

I had several links into Ciscos site about three years ago and I could find things pretty quickly from them but the web-site's changed a lot, my links don't work now, and I'm out of practice.

I'm leaving my current employer at the end of November (sort of redundancy - they're not really sure!) so I'll have to get into the site more as I'm sure to need lots of information when I get another job.

The Doc CDs haven't been given out for a while now, they figure everybody has an internet connection. Lets hope it's not the router connecting you to the internet which you are having problems with...

Good luck with the job hunting, the new NHS project is in your area and they were after Cisco people recently - unfortunately I don't have any contact detils for you.

If I hear of anything I'll PM you.
