Dns
Anybody have any Easy to understand DNS training guides? I'm a slow learner so I need some very beginner level information on how DNS works, how it is used ect. My reasoning is that I want to really understand it for the future, so I want to start with the basics of it. Anybody know what I mean? All my tech books I have just sort of throw it at you like you should have a sort of background on it already which I do but I would like to start form scratch sort of too.
Thanks
Face

I haven't had time to look over yours, John. Do they emphasize BIND or Server 2003?
Someone told me the difference w/ 2K3 is due to active dir. integrated zones. Also DNS is held in AD versus flat files of BIND.
However, I've not found any free ( ) articles yet that compare & contrast the two. I suppose I should just bite the bullet & buy this book: http://www.rallenhome.com/books/dns...book_index.html

Well, I found that when I understood some basics of subnetting, I could launch into DNS feeling more confident. One builds on the other in my book.
Here's a blurb from http://computer.howstuffworks.com/dns5.htm
"Once a name server resolves a request, it caches all of the IP addresses it receives. Once it has made a request to a root server for any COM domain, it knows the IP address for a name server handling the COM domain, so it doesn't have to bug the root servers again for that information. Name servers can do this for every request, and this caching helps to keep things from bogging down.
Name servers do not cache forever, though. The caching has a component, called the Time To Live (TTL), that controls how long a server will cache a piece of information. When the server receives an IP address, it receives the TTL with it. The name server will cache the IP address for that period of time (ranging from minutes to days) and then discard it."
Learning how subnetting happens gave me background for understanding that about DNS/name servers. IP addresses do happen to be a part of DNS, if I remember correctly.

Where I've found subnetting useful is in process of elimination. RedStar had posted a practice quiz question regarding HOST, LMHOST & DNS w/ WINS not enabled.
By understanding local vs. remote, I was better able to understand the significance of why HOST was in there more than simply by knowing its definition.
Either way, each person has to do what's best for his/her learning process. I tend to be one that likes the added hues of subnetting alongside of DNS. That's just me, though.
I've only linked Freak's guides because I need brevity of explanation and frequent breaks when learning at first. His are helpful in that regard.
By the way, I have many days I feel very overwhelmed & not clever at all. For every 100 things I learn in IT, 1000 come behind them to show me I know very little. This is a humbling field!
